PDFBook is a free, privacy-first desktop PDF reader and library manager for Windows, macOS, and Linux. It features two reading modes, a page-flip mode that mimics a real book (with sound) and a vertical scroll mode, plus a full library with folders, tags, ratings, reading state, and notes. PDFBook runs 100% offline with no telemetry, no accounts, and no cloud uploads. Available as Free (50 books), Pro ($6.99/month or $29.99/year), or Lifetime ($89 one-time). Built by YumeBytes with dual PDF engines (pdf.js + PDFium WASM) for native performance on documents up to 500+ pages.

Web reader

More than a viewer,
a complete reading workspace

Library, reading, AI, and PDF creation in one fast, private app.

Organized library

Folders, tags, ratings, reading state, and notes. Search by title, author, or tag in an instant.

Two reading modes

Flip pages like a real book (with page-turn sound) or scroll vertically for note-taking.

Built for serious reading

Bookmarks, table of contents, in-document full-text search, auto-scroll, focus mode, and exact resume from your last page.

Native performance

Two PDF engines: pdf.js powers flip mode, PDFium WASM handles vertical scroll. Lazy, windowed rendering keeps large PDFs smooth.

Bookie, your built-in AI assistant

Bookie understands your library and acts on it through conversation: opening books, organizing, navigating pages, editing metadata. It runs on your own key (Ollama locally, or OpenAI, Claude, or OpenRouter), so you pay your provider directly with no markup, and PDFBook never sees your data.

AI Vision (Pro): Bookie reads your pages

Bookie can read a book's cover or the page you're on and answer questions about what it sees: diagrams, scanned text, handwriting. Powered by your own multimodal model (OpenAI / Claude). AI Vision is a Pro feature. The Free tier is chat-only.

Floating Reader

Read a PDF on top of any app: keep your research up while you write, or a recipe up while you cook. Free 60 min/month, unlimited on Pro.

Manga-ready, right-to-left

Read right-bound like manga and comics or left-bound like a Western book. Switch per title. PDFBook remembers each book's direction.

Build PDFs from images

Drop a folder of JPGs or PNGs, drag to reorder, choose fit and margin, and export a clean paginated PDF.

Capture any screen to PDF

Pick a window, crop the region, and PDFBook flips through the pages snapping each one, turning anything on screen into a clean PDF. Windows for now.

Convert anything to PDF

Turn EPUB, Kobo, Word, DRM-free Kindle, comics (CBZ/CBR), Markdown, HTML, and plain text into PDF, all on your device. No upload, no cloud.

Create password-protected PDFs

Lock a PDF with a password right in the Creator. Encryption is applied on your device, so the file never leaves your computer.

Extract embedded images

Pull every embedded image out of a PDF as PNG. Save all, or pick exactly the ones you want.

Sync your PDF folders

Point PDFBook at the folders where your PDFs live and they flow into your library. Rescan anytime to pull in new files. No importing one by one.

Your data stays yours

Privacy isn't a feature we added. It's how PDFBook is built.

Your files and prompts are never used to train AI.

Your library and files stay on your device. Nothing is uploaded.

No account, no telemetry, no tracking.

AI is opt-in: run it locally, or use your own provider key.

Honest answers,
no sales speak

Real questions from people considering PDFBook.

No. PDFBook itself never receives your files or prompts on a server, and never uses them to train AI. The AI companion, Bookie, is optional and runs on your own API key. Choose Ollama and nothing leaves your device. If you use OpenAI, Claude, or OpenRouter, only what you ask about is sent to that provider under your own account and billing. Major API providers don't train on data sent through their APIs by default, but that's governed by each provider's policy. For zero training exposure, run locally with Ollama.
